Bodmin Dragon Tri 2010

Only 2 MBH made it up to Bodmin for this years Tri, Jonno Gibbins and myself – could be something to do with the earlier date or clashing with Truro Half? a 103 did turn up tho’, only 3 competitors less than last year so perhaps not.
The event for those who don’t know is a 400m pool swim, a 22km technical, fairly hilly cycle and an 8.5km run, again hilly.
This years event was again chip timed by Cris and Karen, transition, not numbered, and on the grass area just outside the pool exit
Swim was non eventful, the faster swimmers going off in the later waves, the rolling start certainly speeded up things.
Weather was dry but a pretty ferocious headwind going out on the bike, some real traffic congestion near the turn around point at Victoria made it pretty hairy in places, but the wind now at your back saw some fast speeds heading back to the centre. Even so Dave Pells bike split of just over 30 minutes aroused suspicion! Dave had in error taken the wrong turn and ended up short, earning him a DQ and also to the poor chap, Chris Simmock, Newquay Road Runners, who followed him, comes to light that the marshal at this point was playing with his phone – but still no excuses as it’s the athletes responsibility to know the course.
The run never gets any easier, a hell of a climb out, about a half mile of back and knee jarring down hill followed by another climb past Lanhydrock House, through the woods and another killer climb before dropping back down to the finish at the Leisure centre.
The race was won by Tom Davey in 1.23.21 from Camel Valley, Camel actually had 5 in the top 10, so easily took the team prize
I managed 9th overall (same position as last year) and 2nd vet 40 in a time of 1.30.12 (5 seconds faster than last year), a good 2 and a half minutes behind 1st vet Mark Smith (also from Camel)
Jonno finished in a good solid 22nd place in 1.39.02.
So ?22 to enter got you a good t shirt, a swim bag thing and a chip timed event, not bad I suppose but Jonno and I could have done with some fellow MBHers to keep us company!
I think I may have found my tri mojo again after losing interest for a while, so shall I go for sub 40 at Newquay 10k or enter Wadebridge tri? decisions, decisions!
Just to say I spotted one of my pet hates and completely it’s against the rules and winds me up, one of the competitors was wearing full headphones on the bike (competitor 63) The marshals should have picked this up and he should have also been DQ’d – he was all over the road and nearly took me out when I passed him!
Come on guys play by the rules, if you don’t care about your safety I care about mine!
