The club meets at Mounts Bay School every Monday at 7pm for social runs of varying lengths, with structured coached sessions at various locations on Thursdays at 7:00pm. (best to e-mail first)

...and what we do!

The club now has over 200 members and regularly has 20-30 turning up for training sessions. Of the group that turn out there is always a wide standard of athletes from beginners, who are especially welcome, to accomplished triathletes and runners. rob-simon-chrisMany thanks to all the marshals who turned up tonight - this morning I only had 8 on my list, tonight well over 20 turned up!

76 competitors took part tonight on what must have been the best evening’s weather out of all the events we have held over the years.  It was warm and sunny - even the pool temperature was warm (which makes a change!)

Pete Le Grice yet again put in another exceptional performance finishing the 200 metre swim and 2 mile run in a time of 12.15!  How does he do it!!  He didn’t have the fastest swim time, that honour went to Ben May completing the swim in 2.02, but Pete completed the run in 9.43.  I think I could just about manage one mile in that time!

Michael Birchmore put in a splendid performance finishing 21 seconds behind Pete in 12.36, with Kyle Kearey over minute behind in third place in 13.39.

Matt Trewhella finished fourth overall in 13.44 and was first junior home.  The Wood brothers were second and third juniors with Tom and Jacob finishing sixth and seventh overall with only five seconds separating them in 13.54 and 13.59 respectively.

Andrew Smith once again picked up first vet prize in 14.48 closely followed by Jonno Gibbins in 14.52.  Julian Wills was in third place in 15.02.

For the senior females, Alice Nicholas was first home in 15 minutes dead.  Emily Trebilcock put in a good effort finishing second in 15.53 with Melissa Reid third in 16.41.  Good luck to Melissa, with Alice as her guide, who are taking part in the Hyde Park paratriathlon in August.

The juniors were well represented again by Vicky Burlingham who was first in 16.29, Charlotte Emsden second in 16.37 and Amy Jolly third in 16.50.

Same names first and second for the vets with Sasha Osborne and Jackie Roberts taking these places again in 17.11 and 17.44.  A new name in third place was Kate Hoffen in 17.59.

Well done to all who took part including Louise Schweitzer who I met whilst putting out the signs.  She is down here on holiday from Brighton and decided to take part on the spur of the moment.

The final event is on Wednesday, 31 August at 7pm with registration from 6pm.  Hope to see you all there.  Anyone who has completed three of the four events be eligible for a series prize.  If you have completed all four events there will a special something for you.

Cubert 2011

What a great turnout for the club, 49 Harriers made there way to Newquay for this weekeday race, the next race in the Cornish Grand Prix. They were actually a small crowd! a total of 672 (720 entries) finishers on the night must make this one of the biggest around, they even ran out of numbers and weren’t accepting anyone further entering at one stage. A lot of you had tired legs still from Sundays tri, whether that was Helston or Bleinham but for some, who obviously recover better than others, you wouldn’t have guessed 2 races in 3 days!

It was the first time in a few years I can remember rain at Cubert, it’s usually cracking the tiles, that mixed in with a bit of a blustery wind made conditions a bit miserable for the later finishers.

Again, a few of us decided to cycle the 30 miles up from Penzance, Nigel decided he would join me on one of my final 70.3 training sessions, but with the wind mostly behind us it wasn’t too arduos (not as bad as when we did Trevornic anyway!) 30 miles average speed 19.4 mph so we didn’t hang around!

The Fun Run, that kicked off at 6.15, is a 1 mile run for the kids, and any adults as a warm up, and I’m pleased to say we had a great turnout from MBH, I heard that Jacob Wood got 1st placed boy, Immy Wood 2nd placed girl in her AG and Finn Burford 2nd placed boy in his, all winning a nice trophy and hoodie – if I’ve missed anyone please let me know

Many MBHers posted new PBs, none other than Dan Lugg, who is very quickly shrinking! Knocked a massive 10 minutes off last years time! Well Done Dan – Windsor Tri for you this week

Neil Eddy, obviously still fresh from his brill performance at Bleinham Tri in the Elite start finished 6th overall, nearly 2 minutes ahead of the next MBHer Phil Sanger

Geoff Letchford shows he hasn’t lost it at all after a brief layoff through injury, Geoff won the Male Vet 55 age group and along with Neil, Phil S, Rich S, Jason W and Matt L pushed the MBH mens team into 3rd – excellent guys – special mention to Tom Wood who finished just outside our top 6 in 7th place, but at the age of only 15, if he keeps it up, along with his fantastic swimming ability, could be a force to reckon with in the triathlon world in future (must run in the family! As you will have seen the same surname above with his brother and sister)

Clive Hibbert, for what is I think the first time, won the male vet 65 age group, Well Done Clive, must be all those pep talks from the legend Ronnie James!

Onto the ladies………

A little disappointed that we didn’t feature in the top 6 ladies teams, can’t understand that really, but it probably is correct as the only prize winner on the night was Nancy Hill, who again finished 2nd (why did you have to be in the same age group as Emma Stepto (ne Stallard)?!? Great Run Nancy, but I reckon you’re doing too much coaching instead of training nowadays, What are you doing with Charlie Holden? A fantastic run from him, pushing him way up the club standings!

Onto Sticker in less than a fortnight, another chance for glory there! (although a few of us will be at Torbay Half and also up at Wimbleball ready for the 70.3 on the Sunday)

Well Done Guys & Girls – keep it up, I’ll update the PBs as soon as I get a spare half a day!

Twas a grand day out Grommit! Plimuff aff 2011

imgp0274Woh, an early, early start (Don’t Plymouth Half Marathon realise that I need my beauty sleep, more so than most!) so it was a 5.30am departure in the MBH minibus for 16 MBHers – we were meeting another half a dozen in Plymouth.

Mrs M, Mhairi and Jess Turton had decided not to run, and here’s hoping they have a speedy recovery.

A couple of the madder ones had done our aquathlon the evening before (Swiss and I), but that was a short sharp sprinty affair and not 13 miles of torture!

The weather was windy with a mizzly rain / mist every so often.

Arriving at the car park, talk was of the new start, now in the city centre and not on the Hoe and the commentator kept remarking how this would be a fast course (what with that bloody Saltram Park hill still in it, you’re joking)

We mustered all the troops we could find for a quick photo (and grabbed in a few prospective newbys, no pun intended, Kate being one of them and Karen’s daughter and boyfriend) and it was a 10 minute walk to the start, as I say, on the main city street.

I bumped into a few familiar faces and wished them good luck – Mike Dowrick, Anthony Burrows, Paul and Caroline Chesterfield - but couldn’t see Mrs Make-up! Where was she hiding?

I could see the 1.30 pacer just behind me, dream on Ian, not this years Plymouth Half, I thought I’d just see how long I could hang on -

About 10 minutes late, 8.40am the gun went off and we headed out towards the Pavilions, back again past where we had just started and then picked up the old course down past the gypos and into Saltram Park, just who was that cooking bacon butties half way up?!!?? Cruel, very cruel!

It was just at the top of the park that Nick, the 1.30 pacer, cruised past with what I thought was a small pack, had he dropped most of them as I thought I was on target!?

Half way, and yep, bang on for just under 1.30 but the wheels started to come off a bit and lost a bit of concentration, I could just see Sarah Kenworthy from Hayle in front, this got my concentration back, I popped another ibuprofen and off I chased, trying to ignore the ‘stinging’ hamstring.

As we came to the ‘turn around’ under the by pass there was Mrs Make-Up running down the other side! Running well! Bloody chicked again!

I managed to catch Sarah at about 10, but she still managed to beat me on chip time! I couldn’t see anyone else I knew so really had to man up for the last 3 – thanks for the shout from Jess Turton and Matt Searl from Plymouth tri on that last hill – it’s not any easier that hill, actually harder, as now there is no one looking over the railings above you giving encouragement – please put the after finish area back there Plymouth

Coming in to the last half mile, 1.30 was a goner, and it was just a matter of trying to not drop any places –

Crossing the line you are handed a nice medal, smart T shirt, bottle of water and ushered to the ‘athletes village’ and bag collection area, now on the opposite side of the finish.

There was Mrs Make-Up, thanks for reminding me I had been chicked! Knee’s better then?!

On entering I was handed a bag and separately a packet of mints!?!? Was my breath a bit stinky?! Who knows what that was about!? – then, what this, another bag?! More ‘goodies

So all in all we got;

Good T Shirt, Great Medal, a flattened cheese and bacon pasty thing, carton of OJ, Go bar, GO drink, 2 chewy bars, very small orange, apple, free samples of male and female moisturiser and some of those dam flaxseed things you scatter over your porridge and, wait for it………….half a biscuit?!?!? completely crushed - come on guys, taking the mick or what?! – on the up side tho, NO CRANBERRY SAUCE

Within minutes of collecting my bag, the mobile went off with a text 1.31.26, not bad for a cripple!

We waited for all our MBH finishers, some more pleased and looking fresher than others, but we all agreed it’s still a great day out and nice race to be part of, even if it is a bit pricey! Thanks to all the marshals, supporters and organisers.

Funny bit of the day was Nige, which was great to see him back racing again, getting changed – he decided to use his Gillet as a changing towel, right in the middle of the athletes village?!? Little did he know the arm hole perfectly lined up with his lily white ass!! Giving everyone a full moon! Well done Nige!

Back to the bus and we hit the road, mood was up beat as many had actually got PBs – or was it because we were all out later for a few bevvies and taking over the local Indian!
