On a very warm Saturday, Mounts Bay Harriers turned out in force for the annual Classic Quarter Race – this event sees runners racing from Lizard Point to Land’s End on the South West Coast path. The total distance is 44 miles & participants can run the event solo, as a pair or a team of four.
In the Solo race, David Andrewartha was the first Harrier back in 10.44.51 giving him 44th place overall.
In the pairs, Tom Berryman & Rebecca Wilding were 16th back in 9.52.55 which they were pleased with.
In the relay 4 teams, the team of Pete Miles, Pete Scriven, Jan Wolfe & Richard Alford had an excellent run, finishing in 3rd place in 7.23.02. The next Harrier team in of Stuart Thomson, Geoff Letchford, Gary Richards & Paul Angove finished in a total time of 7.54.07 giving them 7th place. The general comment from the relay teams was that the warm conditions made the challenge even more challenging.
A number of Harriers completed the race for the first time, several of them having run with the beginners group & moved on through the club to improve their running. Chunky Penhale was one of these runners & after some initial nerves , he enjoyed the race although he was pleased to get to the end of his leg.
Further afield in Stafford, 3 Harriers raced the Ironman 70.3 which consists of a 1.2 mile open water swim, 56 miles on the bike & a half marathon. This Ironman is different to most other triathlons as the bike and run Transitions were in different places.
The Race started an hour late because fog on the lake made it dangerous for anyone to enter the water. Blaine Kearey was first Harrier out the water in 34:47. All three had a good cycle with Richard Boucher doing a sub 3 hours cycle. Ruth Glover cycled the last 5/6 miles with a puncture! The run consisted of 3 loops & conditions were very warm by this time.
Ruth commented that the race was well marshalled and everyone was very supportive and helpful but she would have preferred a cooler run.
