Harriers at Bideford Half Marathon & a crazy marathon challenge for one Harrier

The Harriers had a good representation at the annual Bideford half marathon on Sunday 11th March. Billed as a “swift half”, The fast flat half marathon is popular with runners training for a spring marathon & attracted 1500 runners this year. Weather conditions were reasonably good although Stuart Backhouse commented that the wind was always in your face whichever way you were running! There was some drizzle but not enough to deter the runners.
Neil Eddy was the first Harrier home, in fifth place overall in a time of 1.15.27. Stuart Thomson was the second back, recording a personal best time of 1.26.21 which he was delighted with. Karen McClay was the First Lady Harrier back in 1.49.55.
Several Harriers ran personal bests on the course including Claire Backhouse & Emma Richards.
Further afield in Southend, David Andrewartha ran a full marathon distance on Southend Pier. This consisted of 11 Laps of The pier, all ran on the wet wooden pier boards. David completed this in 3.14.35 which gave him 5th place overall. He enjoyed every yard of the race.
