Saturday 26th January saw the Harriers gather, dressed in the finery rather than the usual lycra to celebrate the Clubs successes over the last 12 months. A number of awards are made & the nominations for these come from the club members voting for their peers.
The Club Chairman, Ian Matthews presented the Awards & commented that 2018 was a superb year for the club with it’s members aiming & achieving at a variety of triathlon, running & cycling events. Ian decided to make two special Chairman’s Awards for 2018 – Keith Gale was recognised for his determination to compete in spite of being visually impaired. Keith ran the London marathon & also completed numerous other events including the Jubilee Pool Aquathlons, triathlon & Penrose Parkrun, all with the aid of his guide Simon Jones. Ian also recognised Zoe Cocksedge for completing the Lands End to John O Groats cycle ride in 9 days, a fantastic achievement by Zoe.
A number of runners recognised by their peers joined the Harriers via the successful beginners group, including Dave & Ross Atkinson-Beaumont who were voted most improved male road runners & are now training hard for their first half marathon.
Off-road running is very popular within the club & husband & wife Gary & Emma Richards were awarded male & female off road runner of the year for their off road adventures which included ultras & marathons. Rebecca Wilding & Luke McLean have both started racing off road & have achieved good results in 2018 with more to come in 2019.
Our junior section has a large number of members & Natalie Gibbs was recognised for the hard work she has put into organising the regular Friday night sessions for the juniors.
Mick Ringwood received a special award for managing to get lost whilst participating in a cycling event in Mallorca. He did finish but only after riding an additional 40 odd miles!
As well as the awards listed, a number of club coaches recognise Harriers for their participation in various activities over the year.
The Harriers congratulate everyone on winning an awards & would also like to thank Ian & Sue Matthews for their hard work in organising the Presentation evening & also their work over the year for the club.
