90 competitors and 30 marshals?turned up to my 50th birthday Jubilee Pool Aquathlon – many thanks to all of them for making it a special day!? Also, they all received a specially commisioned medal for taking part.

Registration started at 6pm and 10 minutes before this time the heavens opened and soaked everything including the laptop which was under cover but due to the gale force wind blowing directly into the registration area nothing was saved! The skies then cleared and it looked like we were in for a lovely evening. Competitors started lining up on the side of the pool with about 15 minutes to go. The sun was shining, the wind was blowing and the sea was having a good attempt at coming over the wall.

The pool temperature was meant to be about 18 degrees but the wind was cooling everything to about 10 degrees – or so it felt to most of the competitors…? As well as having to run into a head wind along the Prom the competitors also had to swim into a head wind with many swim times being recorded slower for the final event.? The worst of the head wind was just outside the cafe entrance where the wind was funnelled into a force which needed extreme effort to get through.? At least it was a tail wind on the way back….

About 30 minutes into the event the heavens opened giving those competitors who went off later a disadvantage of having to run into a solid sheet of rain which was being driven into their faces (the marshals also got a bit wet!).

Pete Le Grice didn’t seem to notice the extreme conditions and once more went on to win the event.? He did have close competition in the form of Dave Bartlett who was just seven seconds behind him, with 18-year-old Callum Jones one minute behind Dave.

Issy Steele once again showed her strength and was first female across the line.? At only 16 years of age she is going to be a force to be reckoned with in years to come.? Melissa Reid was second with Natasha Mundell in third.? All three ladies are from Gyllyngvase SLSC.

Once again the juniors put in an impressive performance with brothers Thomas and Jacob Wood having only eight seconds between them to come second and third respectively in the under 20 age category.

Rosie Tonkin was third under 20 female home behind Issy Steele and Natasha Mundell.

Many thanks to everyone for all the cards and pressies – it was a birthday to remember!
