Jubilee Pool Aquathlon May 2011?- Race 1 results ?HERE
Photos on Facebook for everyone to see HERE
Saturday night saw the first in the series of evening Jubilee Pool Aquathlons organised by Mounts Bay Harriers. This is the fourth year that these events have taken place and are proving so popular that the first event, which was also promoting the opening of the pool for another season, attracted 74 competitors despite the cold, wet and blustery weather on the night. The pool wasn?t doing anyone any favours either, having only recently been filled and the lack of sunshine, the solar-heated pool was a bit chilly to say the least. There were more than a few gasps of surprise as the competitors entered the water!
The event consists of a 200 metre swim around the triangle of Jubilee Pool and then a two mile run to Tolcarne, Newlyn and back along Penzance Promenade. Because the swimmers enter the pool at 30 second intervals the results are not known until the last competitor crosses the line and the results are compiled. This means that everyone has to go flat out to ensure that they get the best time possible because they can easily be pipped at the post by a few seconds if they don?t.
Kyle Kearey, Mounts Bay Harriers, just about held off Ben May, Penzance Swimming Club, to take first place in 14.10 with Ben following closely behind in 14.16. Allan Reid, Gyllyngvase SLSC, took third place in 14.22.
It was 1, 2, 3 for Mounts Bay Harriers in the male vets over 40 category which was won by Jonno Gibbins in 15.38, second Ian Matthews in 15.42 and third Julian Wills 15.44.
The under 20s are going to be a force to be reckoned with this year with four finishing in the top 10.
For the females, Isobel Steel, Gyllyngvase SLSC, was 5th overall and first female and junior home in 14.48. Alice Nicholas, Mounts Bay Harriers, was second in 14.59, with another junior Vicky Burlington, Carn Brea Swimming Club, third in 17.14.
Sasha Osborne won the female vets in 17.57, with Jackie Roberts second 19.03 and Alison Galloway of Tri Logic third in 21.01.
One runner, Ben Whayman of Lusty SLSC, thought he was Forest Gump and ran straight through the finish line and back into Jubilee Pool thinking that the finish line was there. He had run through the finish area with banner, time-keepers, people handing out the race mementoes of bags and water and kept on going! Run Forest Run!
Some of the later runners met with a wedding party on Newlyn Green who were having their photos taken ? a bit of dancing took place between runners and bride!
The next three events take place on the last Wednesday of the month on 29 June, 27 July and 31 August starting at 7pm, registration from 6pm. Just turn up and take part.
