Jubilee Pool Aquathlon 2018 – race 1 results (Please check to make sure that I haven’t made any mistakes)

The last Wednesday in May saw the first Jubilee Pool Aquathlon of the year. The water was a balmy 19°C which was ideal for swimming 200 metres around the triangle of the pool before running along Penzance Promenade for a two mile run.  The weather threatened to put a spoiler on things by raining whilst all the set up was going on, but it stopped in time for the first swimmers to enter the pool at 7pm.

Blind competitor Keith Gale was first in the pool with his guide Simon Jones to the cheers and applause of everyone on poolside. They were followed at 30 second intervals by a further 84 swimmers of various ages from 13 to 68! All abilities were catered for from those that finished in just over 13 minutes to those that took nearly 40 minutes.

There were a few tourists taking part including the Briscoe family from Hale in Cheshire, Toris Jollie from Borehamwood, Hertfordshire, Adam Bennett from Aldersbrook, Adam Bennett  from London, E11 and Luke Roberts from Southampton

Because the competitors go in at 30 second intervals it is not known until the results are compiled who has won. For this event it was Luke Roberts from Southampton with a total time of 13.20 (swim 2.32/run 10.49).  Over a minute behind him was Tom Berryman of Mounts Bay Harriers in 14.37 (swim 3.04/run 11.33).

In third place was the first female competitor Freya Perkin of St Ives SLSC in 14.51 (swim 2.41/run 12.10). She was in the 13-16 age category as was the second female Abbie Downing from Penryn in 16.07 (swim 2.47/run 13.20).  Well done to both these young ladies!

Many thanks to the staff and lifeguards at Jubilee Pool and all the marshals who helped out. Without the likes of them these events do not take place!

Hopefully everyone who took part enjoyed the piggy banks they received!

The next Aquathlon is on Wednesday, 27 June 2018 at 7pm. Registration opens at 6pm – entries on the night only.  Further details on the Mounts Bay Harriers website – www.mountsbayharriers.co.uk
