8 Mounts Bay Harriers travelled up to London this weekend for the inaugural London Landmarks Half Marathon. This new event to the running calendar , saw the competitors run around central London , taking in landmarks such as Buckingham Palace ; the Bank of England ; Millenium Eye ; Houses of Parliament ; Trafalgar Square ; The Shard ; St.Pauls Cathedral and the Tower of London.
A very large field of 10,000 took part in the event , and Paul Angove and Ruth Glover ran extremely well to finish in the first 1,000 ; in positions 787 and 817 respectively.
Paul was the first Harrier home in a chip time of 1:42:07 , which was a very good effort considering the fact that he covered 13.4 miles ( rather than the official 13.1 distance ) , weaving in and out of the runners in front of him.
Ruth Glover ran an outstanding race from start to finish , clocking a superb time of 1:42:36 , and knocking an incredible 6 minutes off her personal best half marathon time.
Michael Rooney also ran an excellent race , finishing in a very good 1:47:21 , knocking a very healthy two minutes off his personal best time for the 13.1 distance.
Damian Cook ran his best half marathon race for a long time to register 1:55:34 ; and Sarah Tregear was the next Harrier to cross the finish line in 2:08:31 – closely followed in by Emily Leiworthy in 2:09:54.
The father and daughter combination of George & Greta Andrews ran very well too …… George clocked 2:25:31 ; and Greta was delighted to register a Half Marathon personal best time of 2:27:46 , whilst running for her nominated charity of Alzheimers Research.
All of the Harriers thoroughly enjoyed the event , which was very well organised considering it was the first one. The crowd support was absolutely superb from start to finish with many thousands lining the course; and several Harriers compared it to the electric atmosphere of the London Marathon .
