MBH Members 10K Handicap

Only the second running of our annual 10K MBH Handicap saw 23 members (and 2 guests) take part on a blustery Sunday morning.
Mike had prepared the sheets and handicap times ready, it looked as if it would certainly favour the ladies today as we have a very talented and fastly improving female contingent.
The faster boys would struggle in ths wind and with PBs taken from up to 3 years ago, I knew I was in with no chance!
Tammy had run to the start, Tim was doing 2 laps, Nancy and Charlie were on their 4th run in 4 days (a 15 miler off road the day before) in preparation for Cyprus and Big Dave (I mean Andrew) trotted off for a 4 mile warm up!

We were awaiting last years winner Trina to defend her title but she failed to appear?!?Mike gave his last minute race instructions as Mark sped into the car park (nothing new there) and we all went to the start.

First off was Gill, who had actually only ever done the St Levan 10K before, but had posted a 48 minute 5 miler, so if she had been training, even a little, she would be difficult to catch.

We all set off, hoping to catch the person in front, for some, including me, an impossible task this season, both Mark and Jeremy having a 2 second head start, needless to say I could only see their backs as they sped off into the distance and up the first hill, Mark really going off like a rocket. The conditions were deceptively warm and soon I was dripping! (probably nothing to do with warmth just lack of fitness)

Soon Miles passed me followed by Geoff L at the 3 mile mark then Andrew, my god I was going backwards! I managed to catch Charlie at about 4 and Tammy at 5 but both these runners had already put in a lot of mileage over the past few days – Yvonne W struggled as this would be the furthest she had run since having major surgery on her back, but she did exceptionally well to even finish, let alone in a respectable time.

Mike and Sam H were waiting at the finish, goody bags and medals for all – so who won?

There’ll be a new name on the Robinson Cup this year! I think next year we will use a PB within the current year and if anyone hasn’t posted a 10K PB we will use a different calculation to work out handicaps, this will make the event a little fairer (none of us are getting any younger!)

A big thanks to Mike for sorting everything out (he needs more help next year) to Sam for taking the finish line position(who will be running next year) and to all you Harriers who entered, although with a membership as large as ours I would have hoped for more entries!
