Mounts Bay Harriers take on various events!

Treggy 7

On the 1st September a team of Harriers raced the Treggy 7 GP race in Launceston.

It is a 7 mile road race which starts in Launceston Town Centre, heads downhill out of town and out onto rural country lanes. There is a nice hill to climb at mile 2.5 then after that Is pretty much flat. The finish area is on the lovely grounds of Launceston Castle.

The first Harrier home was Tim Twiggs who was 25th overall and 1st in his age cat.

The results were:

Tim Twiggs 46:30. 1st age cat

Paul Angove. 51:37

Janet Haynes 55:57 2nd age cat

Tracey Nicholls. 57.46. 3rd age cat

John Gordon 1:02:07

Anthony Penhaul 1:02:46. 2nd age cat

Sam Rowe 1:05:25

Marie-Ann Cann. 1:08:42

Steve Davies 1:11:09

Jackie Stone 1:16:08

Julie Bolitho 1:18:55

Woburn Abbey

This event was a half Ironman Triathlon distance and it took place on the 7th of September. Richard Alford went to compete, making it two half ironman in 7 days after previously competing at the Sundowner last Saturday.

Richard stated that the event was going really well as he had completed the 1.2mile swim in 29 minutes, his fastest swim time by quite a margin & was speeding around the bike course until 14 miles to go, when he picked up a puncture & cycled the last 14 miles on a flat tyre, meaning he had to slow the speed down & even then stated that some of the corners were a bit scary. Richard then hit the run course he had to try & make up the time he had lost. This meant that Richard managed to finish in 5:23:46.

Richard at first didn’t think this was going to be any good as he has been trying to qualify for the British Triathlon GB age group. Although after checking through the results in the evening Richard realized that he has done enough to meet the requirements in order to register for a GB age group place & will now be hoping that it’s enough to earn him one of the 20 places that are on offer.

Porthtowan 10k

Three Mounts Bay Harriers took on this race which is the final race of the series for FreedomRacing Summer Sessions. They where John and Laura Sadler and Julie Bolitho. All three Harriers that took part really enjoyed it even though it was slightly hillier than they had expected it to be, they all enjoyed the scenery along the coast path when they could.

All Harriers would like to thank FreedomRacing for putting on another great.

Sunday the 8th September Bude Pirate race took place, this race is a 8 mile run on trails, three Mounts Bay Harriers took on this race, they where Tim Twiggs, Simon Jones and Julie Bolitho, all Harriers ran well and enjoyed the scenic course even though there where some tough hilly parts to it.

Great North Run

On Sunday 8th of September two Mounts Bay Harriers took on the Great North Run, these Harriers where Ian and Sue Matthews. This event is a half marathon (13.1 miles) which starts in Newcastle Upon Tyne and finishes in South Shields. Both Ian and Sue did really well and enjoyed the course despite it being really hot and very busy. For Sue because of it being so busy it took her 40 minutes to cross the start line so she could start her race, for Ian it took him 7 minutes, even though they both went over the start line later than they thought they would they both ran well and achieved really good times that they where happy with as they had not trained as much as would of liked to for this race.

Ian Matthews – 1 hour 45 minutes

Sue Matthews – 2 hours 19 minutes

Scilly Swim Challenge

This event was taken on by Mounts Bay Harrier Pete Scriven. This was a two day swim challenge which happened over the weekend of 7th/8th of September

On Saturday the first swim was very choppy due to the Northerlies but after that it all calmed down. Sunday, Pete commented saying “it was wonderful”, sunny and the sea was as flat as a pancake. The longest swim was about 5.8km and total was approx 15km. It wasn’t a race so no places or anything. Pete was in the lead pod which was a bit above his normal speed so he was racing most of the way, but still swam really well and managed to keep up with them.

Duchy Minors Athletics

Along with with adults racing from Mounts Bay Harriers, there was also a Junior team competing at Carn Brea for the Duchy Minors Athletics competition.

Tama Griffiths, Sawyer Kelly and Gabriel Kelly competed at the Duchy Minors Athletics comp at Carn Brae, Tama came away with a 1st in high jump & 3rd in 200m. Sawyer was 2nd in shotput and 3rd in 100m. All juniors did really well and did the club really proud.
