Club PB’s

10 Mile PB’s and Club Rankings have been updated after yesterday’s Trevornick 10. Take a look and let Ian know if you think you’ve been shortchanged. Thanks again to Jo Lawless – labouring over the spreadsheets when she should have been in labour! All the best to her and Matt for their forthcoming happy event.

Trevornick 10

17 Mounts Bay Harriers went to Trevornick and came away with four prizes.

The route had changed slightly this year with no beach crossing with rock climb the other side!  There was a very cold wind at the start with everyone trying to decide how many layers to wear and whether gloves were needed or not.

I passed Duncan and Jeremy at about mile four and they were having a very nice chat together – not concentrating on the race at all!

Stephen Ellison took part in his first race for Mounts Bay Harriers as did Gary Richards.

Again, Rich Savage put in a wonderful performace finishing tenth overall in a time of 1.05.48 and coming second in the MV45-49 age group.  Sue Taylor was first female Harrier home in 1.26.18 and picked up first prize in the FV60-64 category.  Her daughter, Nicky, also picked up second FV35-39 but, unfortunately, she was running unattached.

Other age group winners were David Austin (3rd MV 65-69) and Eileen Milsom (3rd FV 60-64).

Many thanks to Newquay Runners for a well marshalled event.

MBH Penzance Triathlon 2012- Feedback

120 slots for Penzance Triathlon and 120 take part on the day – that is some attendance record! Being the first triathlon of the year in Cornwall there was a waiting list to enter and about 20 were disappointed.

There was such a great atmosphere surrounding the whole event throughout the day. This is the first race in the new Cornwall Triathlon Series consisting of ten events throughout the county.

This is the sixth year that Mounts Bay Harriers’ Penzance Triathlon has taken place and it just goes from strength to strength. The 400 metre pool swim at Penzance Leisure Centre, followed by the 15.5 mile bike ride taking in the scenery around Newbridge, St Just, Kelynack, Chapel Carn Brea, Crows-an-wra, Catchall, Drift and Buryas Bridge before returning to the transition area at the One Stop Shop Council car park at Penzance and undertaking the 4 mile run around Heamoor was what each competitor had to complete before crossing the finish line.

The 90 marshals (90:120 marshal to competitor ratio) made sure that the route was well marked out for all competitors and the red flags being waved at strategic points ensured that the traffic was slowed down enough to ensure the safe passage of both cyclists and runners. We even had a motorbike marshal making sure that anyone who had a puncture in the middle of nowhere was quickly recovered – I think no.55 Ben Matthews was very grateful when she turned up!  Many thanks to all who turned up to help out from both Mounts Bay Harriers and other clubs. Thanks also to Brandon Tool Hire at Long Rock for supplying and erecting the racking and barriers on Easter Saturday and taking it away again on Easter Sunday.

Again the weather was very kind to us although it was very misty out St Just way which prevented seeing the absolutely fantastic views out towards Long Ships Lighthouse.

At the finish line all competitors were presented with a medal, banana and water which, together with their goody bag consisting of a technical t-shirt, race belt, packet of seeds, water, hot cross bun, crème egg, shower gel and sweets, meant that they received value for their entry fee!

Special mention should be made of the 27 novices who took part today. This was either their first or second triathlon and they all done absolutely brilliantly! There were two Mounts Bay Harriers in this category, Gary Schofield, who picked up second male novice and Eve Lay who went away with third female novice.

The first Mounts Bay Harrier home was Kyle Kearey in fourth place followed by seventh placed Matt Lawless – whose wife is expecting her baby any day and we all thought it was going to be on Easter Sunday!  Carol Julian was first female Harrier home.

This year there were a few trade stands – Sponsors of the Cornwall Triathlon Series, USN (www.usn.co.uk ), brought a trailer and handed out samples; Swim Supplies, Redruth (www.swimsupplies.co.uk ) had a stand; Carrick Leisure was there for anyone who wanted to sign up for any other events in the series www.cornwall.gov.uk/default.aspx?page=29635 ; Vivobarefoot (www.vivobarefoot.com/uk ) showed samples of their shoes and had video analysis available.

Also Vivobarefoot sponsored some of the prizes:
1st place male and female overall – (each) Pair of Vivobarefoot shoes of their choice. Plus a private 2 hour technique and injury assessment/coaching clinic with The Barefoot Academy (Leah Katia, Injury Specialist and Jonno Gibbins, Barefoot Coach (www.thebarefootacademy.com ). Value of approx £220 each
1st male and female in each age group category – £45 off voucher for a group day injury and technique clinic with The Barefoot Academy (normal price is £95 each for the day) Plus a £20 Trizone (www.trizonestore.co.uk ) voucher each.

Because of the way in which a pool-based triathlon is timed, no-one knows who the winner is until the final results have been produced. There were some names bandied about before the event with the prime suspect, Neil Eddy of Cyclelogic, actually taking first place nearly three minutes ahead of second placed Gareth Smith of Camel Valley Cycle & Triathlon Club.

One prize per person meant that the prizes were spread over a greater number of people so an overall winner cannot win an age group prize:

Marshals’ briefing – Penzance Triathlon – Easter Sunday, 8 April 2012

First reminder that the marshals’ briefing will take place upstairs in the room on the right at the top of the stairs, at Penzance Leisure Centre at 7.15am for 7.30am – DON’T BE LATE!!!

If you can help set up beforehand from 6am or help take everything down after the event then that would be great.

I have over 90 marshals who have offered to help on the day – I hope the weather’s good. We’ve had hot and sunny, we’ve had freezing cold and snow – so please dress according to the weather on the day, it’s the one thing I can’t arrange! You will all receive a goody bag and a high viz (except those in the leisure centre) – please return the high viz to me on the day if possible please.

Chris Trewhella will be the marshal co-ordinator and you will be given his and Ian Matthew’s telephone number on the day in case of emergency. Chris will go round and ensure that you all know what you should be doing.

Many thanks to everyone who has offered to help – this event would not be possible without you!

An Resek 2012 – Pete Le Grice wins!

Gorgeous day except for the more than brisk Easterly, meaning a head wind accross Loe Bar up the steep coastal path climb to Gunwalloe and onto Culdrose before at last the respite of a tail wind for most of the final 3 or so miles back to the finish. At least the going under foot was dry.
A few cock ups I have to say.

There were 2 start lines??!! of which most runners headed for the wrong one initially. But anyway, that sorted out, off we all hurtled on the dizzy downhill first mile through Helston, except that is for Pete Le Grice , Dan Alsop and a few others who turned left at the bottom of Trengrouse Way after 800 m and went up Meneage street rather than turning right and going down it. Sorry, but what was that marshall doing???

I carried on my merry way in the company of 3 Cornwall AC runners, Neville Witham 55 age cat plus Rob Beckett and Mark Trebilcock 50 age cat as we chatted to each other until we got to Loe Bar. Then we stopped chatting.

Neville and Rob were just in front of me but I know from experience if I run far to the left of the ridge the going is much firmer. They were heading for the centre as everyone else had done. My dilemma was, do I follow them and use them as a wind shield or go left, confront the wind but have firmer ground.

I tried to get the best of both worlds by shouting to Neville “go left it’s firmer”. Both Rob and Neville did but I went even further left, overtook them both after 50 m and headed off into the distance. Or so i thought.

The climb off the beach at 5 miles is just so hard and you really do have to dig in but I seemed to be hanging on to those in front and even made some ground.

I hit the wall at 8.5 miles and inevitably Rob and Neville overtook me but I sort of hung on to their shirt tails to the finish.

Disappointed with my time but it was half a mile further than the last time I ran it, and I cant fathom why that extra loop was added in?

Now then… The presentations, ah yes!

First of all the trophies for the first 2 male and female competitors were missing so just a handshake. The chap with the tannoy had it facing the ground, spoke quietly, had the microphone about a foot from his mouth and on top of that had problems pronouncing peoples names. Or maybe he didn’t have his glasses, I dunno, but I ended up as Geoff Latchford, Revis Crowle was Reevis Crowle, Neville Witham was Neal Witham and I daren’t repeat what I think he called Pete Le Grice and Fiona Reutsch.

However it was a great 10 miler except for the last 7 miles.

Worth mention,
Pete Le Grice won it outright in 56.34!!!
Gus Gusterson 1.05.45
Rich Savage 1.06.11
Mat Lawless well up there.

Age cat results…

Geoff Letchford 1st over 60 male 1.10.41
Suzy Taylor 1st over 55 female 1.25.13
Clive Hibbert 3rd over 65 male 1.27.29
Eileen Milsam 1st over 60 female 1.42.52

Special menton to Iva McNevin for completing her first 10 miler in the company of Yvonne watkins.

Hope I havent forgotten anything.
