Stithians Tri 2012

The first Olympic distance Stithians Lake triathlon took place on Sunday under a strange object in the sky – sunburn all round!!

The original distances of a 1500 metre lake swim, 40k bike and 10k run had to be revised due to the local Council deciding to surface dress the roads around Stithians the week before. Last minute re-routing made for a very hilly bike ride taking in Lanner Hill and all other hills around the Helston/Penryn area!

Weather conditions for the swim were near on perfect with only a slight breeze picking up as the air warmed ? a slight ripple on the lake broke up the mirrored-effect which welcomed everyone at registration at 6.30am.

8am and four waves of swimmers went off at 10 minute intervals to break up the 155 entrants. Some swimmers in later waves easily overtook those in earlier ones. A battle was going on between Dave Bartlett and Neil Eddy both from Cycle Logic. They came out of the water neck and neck and went out of transition on their bikes side by side. When Dave came in before Neil everyone who knows them realised something had happened. In the extreme heat Neil had dropped his water bottle half way around the course and had no hydration during the second gruelling part of it and suffered accordingly. He did his best to catch Dave on the boggy, muddy run but to no avail.

Sarah Myford also of Cycle Logic was first female home with ex-Mounts Bay Harrier, Susie Harwood a close second. Charlotte Hurst of TriZone has been studying hard at university and so had not got the training in as she had hoped for this event, finishing in third place overall but first in her age category.

The 13 Mounts Bay Harriers who took part done extremely well with Gus Gusterson coming in 10th closely followed by Kyle Kearey in 11th place. Helen Webb was second in her age group and 5th female overall.

A battle was going on between Harriers Phil McNevin and Richard Boucher with both racing for the line together Phil pushed Richard sideways with Richard pulling him back on the line ? they finished with 0.05 of a second between them! It was all done in the best possible taste….and a lot of good camaraderie!
