Penzance Triathlon 2014 feedback (updated 07/04/14)

The eighth Penzance Triathlon took place on a wet, windy and foggy Sunday morning on 6 April organised by Mounts Bay Harriers.

120 competitors had entered the race to swim 400 metres of the pool at Penzance Leisure Centre, cycle 15.5 miles around the roads of West Penwith, taking in Heamoor, Mount Misery, Newbridge, St Just, Chapel Carn Brea, Crows-an-Wra, Catchall, Drift, Buryas Bridge and Newlyn before the 4-mile run around the streets and byways around Heamoor, Trengwaiton and Castle Horneck.

Conditions were not ideal and competitors were advised to bring high visibility clothing with them and lights for their bikes. The organisers had put up nearly 150 signs to aid competitors and advise other road users of the event as well as 90 enthusiastic marshals who were stood out in the wet and cold on roundabouts and street corners to ensure the safety of everyone concerned.

Penzance Triathlon is an ideal race for novices and 34 took part in their first or second event. Of those 11 were Mounts Bay Harriers with Stacey Nicholas leading the way in 1.51.31 with 16-year-old Eden Backhouse not far behind in 1.53.15 with her picking up the first under 20 female prize. Geraldine Wallace decided that as a 60th birthday treat she would enter a triathlon for the first time and won the 60+ category together with Gillian Johns who picked up third in the 50-59 age group. Verity Rogers and Claire Sharp surpassed all their expectations by crossing the finishing line and putting to bed all their worries about not completing the event. Stacey’s husband, Scott Nicholas, also took part in his first triathlon finishing in 1.43.27 together with Christopher Sedgeman (bike racking supplier, both of whom had spent all Saturday lunchtime putting on the bike racking). Peter Uren surprised himself by being second 60+ male. Simon Aitken also completed his first triathlon by a spur of the moment acceptance of a last minute place the night before with Paul Riggs making up the novice entry for the Harriers.

George Prewett from Saltash was the overall winner in a time of 1.18.55 made up of a 6.10 swim, 48.19 bike and 24.26 run. He was over a minute ahead of second placed Ian Wright from St Agnes who finished in 1.20.15 (6.23/49.35/24.17) with Mounts Bay Harrier, Kyle Kearey, in third place in 1.21.14 (5.17/50.32/25.25).

For the women, Alice Nicholas of Mounts Bay Harriers stormed home in 11th place overall and first lady in 1.27.25 (5.28/55.06/26.51) over five minutes ahead of the second placed lady, Anne Maskell of Cycle Logic, who finished in 1.32.28 (7.42/57.15/27.31). Kathryn Burgess of Cornwall AC was third in 1.36.00 (8.16/1.00.30/27.14).

The Harriers also had some brilliant finishing times in the age group categories with Holly Rothschild and Charlotte Kent finishing first and second respectively in the 20-29 age group. For the men Gary Rich was second in the 30-39 category (and fourth overall) with Blaine Kearey being third 30-39 and eighth overall. Mark Worledge once again putting in a great performance to come second in the 40-49 age group. In the male under 20s Jacob Wood was first in a time of 1.24.43 and sixth overall with Ben Hicks in third place and 10th overall.
