Penzance Triathlon 2015 was the best to date with even the sun putting in an appearance for the first time in a few years! Gone was the wind, rain and fog and clear skies welcomed all the competitors. The event consisted of a 400 metre pool swim at Penzance Leisure Centre, followed by an 15.5 mile undulating bike ride from the St Clare’s Council Offices through Newbridge to St Just, Land’s End Aerodrome, Crows-an-Wra and back along the A30 to Penzance. The competitors then had to run four miles through Heamoor, Trengwaiton and Castle Horneck before crossing the finish line back at the Leisure Centre.
The day was mainly for novices with 32 people taking part in their first or second triathlon! Others were using the event as a warm up for the season. The novices did well with six of them winning age group prizes. Connor Waller, who only learnt to swim recently, had a brilliant race finishing second under 20-year-old and 10th overall! Zoe Cocksedge and Sasha Osborne surprised themselves coming second and third in the 40-49 age group category with Daniel Kinver third in the male 20-29 age group. Ges Wallace and Rachel Glover both of Mounts Bay Harriers picked up second and third place respectively in the 60+ category.
A superb performance was put in by Jacob Wood of Mounts Bay Harriers coming second overall and first in the under 20 age group in a time of 1.17.56. He had a faster swim time than winner George Prewett of Tamar Trotters who is training for the Kona Iron Man World Championships in Hawaii in October and who finished in 1.15.16. Ian Wright of Truro Goats Triathlon was third in 1.18.30.
Also taking part was GB paratriathlete Melissa Reid and her guide Melissa King. They were using the event as a training run for the upcoming season to test out their strength and fitness. They powered past everyone on their tandem and left no prisoners on the run. They were first females across the line but due to the fact that they were riding a tandem they didn’t get recognised for any prizes – which they were happy about as they purely wanted to see how well they worked together.
Velotive provided the first two females – Hannah Cary and Lisa Player. Only 19 seconds was between these two and Lisa could easily have taken first place if she hadn’t forgotten where she placed her bike in transition – she did two loops of it before she found it! Third place went to Sally Myatt of Tamar Trotters.
Families were taking part in the triathlon with mother and son, Anne and Connor Waller, mother and daughter, Clarie and Eden Backhouse as well as Rachel and Ruth Glover, husband and wife, Garry and Lisa Player as well as Scott and Stacey Nicholas and brothers, Kyle, Blaine and Liam Kearey.
The atmosphere was relaxed and friendly and the marshals were absolutely amazing out on the course with a party taking place on Heamoor roundabout – or so it seemed with the amount of noise they were making!
