The New Max 2010

It was a warm evening and numbers were down due to the football but still 126 took part in The New Max. This is a 10k multi-terrain race which was relatively dry and mud-free compared to previous years - but the staircase was still there!

Four Harriers took part - Mike Robinson, Rachel Tresidder, Sam Perkin and Yvonne Turner plus Mike’s friend, Dave Long from Mounts Bay School.

The race started and Sam was going backwards through the field!! It turned out that he had dropped his water bottle and he decided that he needed a pee - why he couldn’t have gone before the race started is beyond me…

There was a lovely, friendly atmosphere all the way round with helping hands ready to assist over various obstacles. I was nearly crushed by a Carn Runner as he was sliding back down a steep slope, but a pair of hands on his bum to push him back up the muddy slope saved me from being flattened!

Mike came second overall in 45:18 being beaten by Peter Devenport from Scotland, who used to run for Newquay.? Next in was Rachel in 53:51 and fourth woman overall. Sam finished in 57:14. He had to sprint round the course after his earlier exploits - and he said he was going to take it easy!

I was running with Helen Thomas from Carn Runners. I just about beat her in 1:01:43 and came fourth in the 45-49 age group but she picked up second prize in the 35-39 category!? Something wrong there…
